SEC Creates COVID-19 Market Monitoring Group

SEC Creates COVID-19 Market Monitoring Group

April 27, 2020

The SEC has formed an internal, cross-divisional COVID-19 Market Monitoring Group to assist agency officials with actions and analyses related to the effects of COVID-19 on markets, issuers and investors, and to respond to requests for information and assistance from other regulators and public sector agencies.

The COVID-19 Market Monitoring Group will coordinate with staff in the Divisions of Economic and Risk Analysis (DERA), Trading and Markets, Investment Management,  and Corporation Finance, the Offices of Municipal Securities, Credit Ratings,  Compliance Inspections and Examinations, International Affairs, the Chief Accountant, and the SEC’s Activities-Based Monitoring Committee.

S.P. Kothari
SEC DERA Director

“At the SEC, our monitoring of, and responses to, the effects of COVID-19 on our capital markets often must take into account complexities, interconnections and continually evolving dynamics of our markets.  This work benefits from the input of multiple SEC divisions and offices,” SEC Chairman Jay Clayton said in a statement. “For the past several months, the women and men of the SEC have worked across divisions and offices to assess and respond to the effects of COVID-19 on our capital markets and our investors. The COVID-19 Market Monitoring Group will help us continue and expand upon this interdisciplinary work. This group will also aid our efforts to assist and support the work of the [President’s Working Group], [Financial Stability Oversight Committee], [Financial Stability Board] and our other domestic and global regulatory partners.”

The COVID-19 Market Monitoring Group will be chaired by S.P. Kothari, the SEC’s Chief Economist and Director of DERA.  Assisting Kothari will be Jeffrey Dinwoodie, Chief Counsel and Senior Policy Advisor for Market and Activities-Based Risk in the Office of the Chairman.
