Co-Director of Enforcement Steven Peikin to Leave SEC

August 10, 2020

The SEC has announced that Steven Peikin is leaving the SEC on August 14, 2020. Peikin has served as Co-Director of the SEC’s Division of Enforcement with Stephanie Avakian for more than three years. Avakian will remain Director of the Division. During their tenure, the SEC has brought thousands of enforcement actions that resulted in over $13.5 billion in disgorgement and penalties, and over $3.1 billion returned to harmed investors. In the press release announcing Peikin’s departure, the SEC discussed the Division’s response to COVID-19 and described the five core principles that have guided the Division’s work under the leadership of the Co-Directors, including Focus on the Main Street Investor, Focus on Individual Accountability, Keeping Pace with Technological Change, Impose Sanctions that Most Effectively Further Enforcement Goals, and Constantly Assess the Allocation of Resources.
